What the Romans Didn’t Have

While we certainly have no way of confirming this, apparently when the Romans were building aqueducts (the first, evidentially, dates back to 312 B. C. ), they were using a design calculation methodology—sketch and solve—that has continued to be used by engineers—even today.

While we certainly have no way of confirming this, apparently when the Romans were building aqueducts (the first, evidentially, dates back to 312 B.C.), they were using a design calculation methodology—sketch and solve—that has continued to be used by engineers—even today. But GEOMATE (www.cadcalcs.com) has developed a new software package, CADCALCS 2.0, that combines sketching, calculations, and optimization in one application, such that users can work with geometry in a way analogously to the way that those working with numbers use spreadsheets. There is a library of 88 geometry-associative calculations that can automate a wide array of engineering tasks. There’s also a function that allows users to backsolve design challenges. It can be used by itself or in conjunction with Excel and several CAD applications. Imagine what the Romans could have done.
