First Amphibious Ice Cream Truck Sets Sail
13. July 2011
The world’s first amphibious ice cream truck is looking to corner the nautical market in London. Serving boaters and beachgoers, the HMS Flake 99 is commissioned by Cadbury for ice cream seller Fredericks, and can peddle tasty treats on land as a truck and by water as a boat.
When London officials ruled ice cream truck chimes “noise pollution” in residential neighborhoods, many drivers saw such a decline in business they had no choice but to call it quits. Fredericks decided to avoid the whole problem of neighborhood noise by taking its business to the water. (One assumes the London congestion tax doesn’t apply there, as well.)
The truck/boat – which reaches a top speed of 5 knots – set out on its maiden voyage on the River Thames in June and will continue touring Britain's beaches this summer. The company says it plans to take the vehicle across the English Channel to Venice next year.
To keep with the Battersea Power Station tradition here at Time Compression, there’s a nice shot of the HMS Flake 99 sailing past the British landmark in the YouTube video below.
