GE’s Solar-Powered Carousel
9. August 2011
The lack of color isn’t the only thing that sets General Electric’s (GE) Carousolar apart from the merry-go-rounds of carnivals past – these horses run on the power of the sun. The solar-powered carousel is part of a traveling promotion to tout the company’s latest innovations in solar panel construction.
The all-white carousel is powered by 100 ultra-thin film solar panels that use a cadmium tellurium-based semiconductor to turn the sun’s rays into electricity – putting the carousel in motion. GE says the strong glass laminate design of the panels help them stand up to humidity, high temperatures, and ultraviolet light.
The carousel’s minimalistic look gets a kick of color from GE’s Tetra Contour LED lights which are more green than their neon counterparts – offering 40% greater energy-saving benefits.
While it had its debut at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin earlier this year, the Carousolar is now offering free rides at South Street Seaport in Manhattan until early September. But with this bargain, riders should probably prepare for a long wait. The good news is if you drain the battery on your smart phone or iPod while waiting for your turn to ride, GE has solar-powered charging stations set up around the carousel to give your batteries a boost.
