Open Innovation: You Snooze. You Lose.
Gary S. Vasilash, Editorial Director

Late last month I had the opportunity to attend "CoDev 2010," the ninth annual international congress on Open Innovation and Co-Development organized by The Management Roundtable and the Product Development Management Association.

And you may be thinking: "Ninth International Congress. . .snooze."

Which was far from the case.  In fact, it couldn’t be much further.

Because in point of fact, the whole concept of Open Innovation is one that any company in any industry needs to be not merely thinking about but pursuing with the sort of zeal that is ordinarily done only if there are big rewards involved—and there are big rewards involved, both in a positive sense (as in making more money) and a negative one (losing less).

Rapid Tooling: Poised for Rapid Takeoff

"Rapid tooling" (RT) can mean two things. It can mean using additive technology to make a tool for short-run casting, injection molding, and the like. It can also mean using additive technology to make production tools—not just molds, but custom or short-use fixtures and assembly tools. Both RT types are becoming increasingly popular, with numerous developments happening in both. Here’s a look at some of what’s happening in RT. MORE>

Although we’re guessing that Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin weren’t there—as they will be (or are at least scheduled to be) on Sunday March 7—an Academy Award® was bestowed on Mark Jaszberenyi, Gyula Priskin, and Tamas Perlaki for the design and development of Autodesk Lustre software, which is used for digital color grading for film (and TV, but let’s focus on the big picture).

Incisive Design, Faster Incisors

Here’s a statistic to sink your teeth into: Some 5 million sets of partial dentures are made each year in the U.S.  Considering the number of Baby Boomers that are soon to join the ranks of denture wearers, the 5 million figure is probably only a bite-sized portion of what’s to come.

A New Take on the Lawn Mower

Lawn mowers seem like pretty simple machines. There’s a motor on top, deck, wheels, and a blade—easy enough. But what would you do if you were given the task of redesigning the lawn mower? That’s the job the American Lawn Mower Co. and Homelite gave to the team at ID Group (Huntington Beach, CA; idgroup-inc.com). MORE>
