Still just a prototype, Alstom’s (www.alstom.com) AGV high-speed train can move along the rails at 224 mph, making it among the fastest trains in the world, surpassing the company’s current TGV high-speed trains by more than 27 mph. Constructed using aluminum and composite materials, the trains—complete with carriages—will weigh 45 tons less than complete TGV train systems used in Europe, with power consumption cut by 15%. The lighter weight will allow the AGV to tow up to 14 carriages, compared to only 7 on the TGV, accommodating 400 more passengers.
