While scanning is often performed to create cool-looking products, it is notable that the MH 3D Scanner from Artec, available from Exact Metrology (exactmetrology.com) is itself a well-designed unit. The handheld device works like a typcal video camera, but it generates 3D images. To use it, someone simply walks around the object of interest with the MH and scans it. The device has both wide-field-of-view 3D and mega-pixel 2D sensors so shape and texture are captured. Accompanying software combines the captured images into one. It can be used for apps ranging from medical imaging to prototyping.
