Solido’s SD300 Pro 3D makes parts from STL files using a roll of PVC engineering plastic, a glue cartridge and the anti-glue gun, all of which costs $360 to place. A spokesman estimates the cost of ownership at less than $2 per cubic inch of material.

One by one it seems the barriers to 3D printing continue to fall. The latest entry to the U.S. market is Israel-based Solido (solido3d.com), which is launching the SD300 Pro 3D, with two key specs: Under $10,000 and under 100 lbs.

The $9,500 machine is aimed at designers and engineers who need a quick check of a prototype or part, from their desktop—and not a desktop that requires some moderate reinforcement. The machine’s footprint takes up 18-in. x 28.5-in. with a height of 16 in. It weighs in at 99 lbs. with the full cartridge of PVC engineering plastic.

Boasting accuracy of within 0.1 mm, SD300 Pro 3D is capable of producing small subassembly parts originating from STL files from multiple CAD sources. It creates parts with a maximum build size of 6 in. x 8 in. and 5 in. height.

“Essentially, there is a carousel that holds the anti-glue pin, there’s an Exacto knife that will make the finite detail accurate cuts and the anti-glue gun just releases the glue in specified areas,” says Karl Huber, Jr., director of marketing and business development for SolidVision Inc. (solidvision.com; Littleton, MA), which will serve as the U.S. reseller.

The machine requires minimal post processing. Single or multiple parts may be created inside a 6.5 in. x 8.5 in. x 5.5 in. block. The parts are pulled from the block by breaking off the edges. The PVC material comes in transparent, red, blue, black and amber, all of which may be painted without any sanding.
