Two new handheld laser scanners joining Z Corp’s 700 series—the 700 PX and 700 CX—take aim at big objects, such airplanes, to capturing finer details of artwork or artifacts. Using AICON photogrammetric software (http://www.aicon.de/content/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1&lang=e), the 700 PX has eight times the accuracy of the standard 700 scanner for reverse engineering, inspection, measurements and rapid prototyping. It’s tailored to scan large objects, such as aircraft and vehicles. The 700 CX, which scans and renders surface data in 24-bit color to compose a comprehensive image, also provides automatic texture mapping that may be saved separately from the mesh, allowing users modify or refine the texture in photo editing software. The device is suited for cultural preservation, anthropology and archeology as well as for Web applications, product design and reverse engineering. Suggested manufacturer prices are $84,900 for the 700 PX and $49,900 for the 700 CX.
